H.E. Ambassador Sun Xianghua Attended Chinese Community's Bursary Hand-over Ceremony in Mokhotlong, Lesotho

On 22 July 2017, H.E. Dr. Sun Xianghua, Ambassador of China, attended the Bursary Hand-over Ceremony in Mokhotlong by the China-Lesotho People-to-People Friendship Action Fund. Hon. Ntoi Rapapa, Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Halebonoe Setsabi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, local government officials, traditional leaders and representatives of the Chinese community, the local community, teachers and students also attended the event.

 

Ambassador Sun, together with the Chinese community leaders, handed over donations of bursary and study kits to 50 needy students from 5 local high schools, which was highly welcomed by the local community and celebrated by the students singing the song of "Kea leboha Chaena".

 

In his remarks, Ambassador Sun said, the Chinese government had long been helping Lesotho in many areas including infrastructure, public health, education, food security, capacity building, etc. In the same spirit, the local Chinese community regarded Lesotho as their home away from home and had long been contributing to the local community through various charitable activities such donating bursary and food. Quoting the local saying "one can walk fast alone but walk far together with others", Ambassador Sun called upon the local community and the Chinese community to stand together and help each other, together to make China-Lesotho relations a fine example of relations between countries regardless of their sizes and distance.

 

Hon. Rapapa thanked the Chinese government's continuous help and the local Chinese community's contribution. He called the Chinese in Lesotho as "Basotho originated from China" and asked the local people to welcome them and make them feel at home. He also encouraged the sponsored students to work hard and perform well.

 

Hon. Setsabi highly commended the Lesotho-China relations and highly appreciated all the recent assistances from the Chinese government. He said the Fund had shown another friendly gesture and required the local community to protect the Chinese community as their real brothers and sisters, together pursuing peace, stability and security as appealed by the Right Honourable Prime Minister.

 

Mr. Chen Guofeng, on behalf of the Chinese community, stressed the importance of education in the development of China's education sector while sharing his own experience. He hoped that the students could complete their study well and both Chinese and local people could work hand in hand to bring a better future to Lesotho. The district administrator Mr. Molefe Mpesi, representatives of high schools principals and the local chief also expressed their gratitude to the Chinese government and the Chinese community for their generosity, and called upon the students to work hard and the local people to take care of the Chinese nationals in Mokhotlong.
