Li Zhaoxing Meets with Lebanese Prime Minister, the Foreign Ministers of Spain and Other Seven Countries, the Foreign Ministers of Six GCC Countries, Secretary-general of the LAS and Other Leaders

On September 20, 2005, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met respectively with Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea (ROK) Ban Ki-moon, Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili, Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, Congolese Foreign Minister Raymond Ramazani Baya, Algerian Foreign Minister Mohammed Bedjaoui, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Foreign Minister of Guinea-Bissau Soares Sambu and Secretary-general of the League of Arab States (LAS) Mahmoud Moussa, held a group meeting with the Foreign Ministers of the six GCC (Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf) countries and held a tri-party informal meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh in New York .

When meeting with Siniora, Li said that China-Lebanon relations have been developing steadily and the economic and trade cooperation has witnessed remarkable effects. China supports Lebanon's efforts in promoting internal unity, undertaking national reconstruction and developing good-neighborly friendship and would like to strengthen cooperation with Lebanon in the areas of economy and trade, culture, education and tourism.

Siniora said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, both sides have respected each other, treated each other as equals and established mutually beneficial cooperation of sincerity and friendship with a solid foundation. The Lebanese government thanks for China's support and assistance and looks forward to enhancing and deepening cooperation with China in various areas.

When meeting with Moratinos, Li noted that currently, China-Spain relations are faded with a favorable opportunity of further development. China would like to strengthen cooperation with Spain in the areas of mid and small enterprises, telecommunications, energy and investment, elevate the bilateral relations to a new level and promote China-EU cooperation.

Moratinos said that Spain is satisfied with the momentum marked by the continuous development of bilateral relations and steady expansion of economic and trade cooperation and would like to enhance cooperation with China and contribute EU-China relations.

Li and Ban Ki-moon indicated that the Foreign Ministries of both sides would make joint efforts to implement the consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries and push for in-depth development of China-ROK comprehensive cooperative partnership. Both sides will continue to coordinate with all related parties and advance the process of peaceful resolution of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.

When meeting with Moussa and the Foreign Ministers of six GCC (Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf) countries, Li said that China's cooperation with the GCC and the LAS (League of Arab States) countries in various areas has been developing steadily and both sides have become important cooperative partners. China would like to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation with the six Gulf countries and the LAS members in the areas of economy, trade and investment and keep closer coordination in international affairs.

Moussa and the Foreign Ministers of six GCC countries highly appreciated China's important role in promoting the peace process in the Middle East and indicated that the economies of both sides are highly complementary to each other and to strengthen cooperation conforms to the fundamental interest of both sides. They expressed willingness to keep closer the bilateral economic and trade cooperation in a bid to contribute to all-round development of bilateral relations.

When meeting with Baya, Li said that China and Congo enjoy a solid political foundation for their bilateral relations and huge potentials in economic and trade cooperation. China will continue to support Congo's peace process and would like to earnestly implement the consensus reached between the leaders of both sides in Beijing this March, promote all-round development of bilateral relations and enrich the connotations of China-Africa cooperation.

Baya noted that Congo thanks China for its various support and assistance and stands ready to strengthen cooperation with China in the areas of politics, economy and trade.

When meeting with Gheit, Li noted that China and Egypt would witness the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties next year. China stands ready to take this as an opportunity to jointly advance the bilateral strategic cooperative relations with Egypt.

Gheit indicated that Egypt would like to keep closer cooperation with China, deepen the friendly cooperative relations between both sides and strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues.

When meeting with Bedjaoui, Li said that the friendship between China and Algeria is developing vigorously. During President Hu's visit to Algeria last year, both sides declared the establishment of bilateral strategic cooperative relations, which has injected new connotations into the traditional friendship between both sides. China would like to accelerate the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation with Algeria in an all-round manner.

Bedjaoui said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, both sides have offered support and assistance to each other and the friendly relations have been developing steadily. Algeria will exert itself to push for in-depth development of bilateral relations and welcome and support more Chinese enterprises to invest and prosper their businesses in Algeria.

When Li met with Rupel, Zurabishvili and Sambu, both sides indicated that they would make active efforts to further develop China's bilateral relations with Slovenia, Georgia and Guinea-Bissau and the cooperation in the multilateral areas.

Li exchanged views with Lavrov and Singh on the reform of the UN, international counter-terrorism, narcotics control, regional situation and other issues when they held the tri-party informal meeting.

On the evening of the same day, Li attended the celebrations on China's National Day held by the United Federation of the Chinese Associations in Great New York.
